Radio 1's Grimmy thinks 1D will never get back together

Nick Grimshaw used his final Radio 1 Breakfast Show today (August 9) to delight One Direction fans... and then promptly destroy all of their hopes that the boys will reunite again soon.

Grimmy spent his final show reminiscing about his most memorable radio moments, so of course he took the time to play a One Direction song – 'Drag Me Down', their first single without Zayn, if you were wondering – and listeners were overjoyed to hear the boys back on the radio.

But then Nick decided to follow up the song with a reflection on whether or not the band will get together after embarking on their temporary hiatus back in 2016, and what he had to say wasn't what fans wanted to hear.

"When we started this show they were all together as a five piece," he noted. "Do you think they'll ever get back together? No, not a chance. It's not happening, is it?"

It may have just been a throwaway comment, but considering Grimmy is pretty close friends with Harry Styles, fans are still a little worried that the radio DJ may know more about this than we do.

The group announced their hiatus in 2015 before taking a break to focus on their solo ventures in March 2016, but Liam Payne recently discussed the possibility of a reunion happening "one day soon" back in June.

"It's amazing that we're doing our own thing and then, hopefully one day soon, we get back together and have another great time of it, who knows?" he said.

It may not actually be all that soon, though, as Liam is busy prepping for the launch of his solo debut album for the end of the year and a worldwide tour to follow in 2019, while Harry has just finished up a tour of his own and Louis Tomlinson has landed a new gig on The X Factor.

It looks like the best One Direction reunion we can hope for in the next few months is a mini one between Louis and Niall Horan on the ITV reality show.

Meanwhile, Greg James will be taking over Grimmy's spot on the Radio 1 Breakfast Show, as Nick takes his place hosting the 4pm-7pm slot.
