Natalie Imbruglia has welcomed her first child and announced that her "heart is bursting" with joy in a sweet Instagram post.

The Australian-British actress and singer shared a picture of her newborn son's hand clutching her thumb, and revealed his very cute name in the caption: "Welcome to the world.. Max Valentine Imbruglia. My heart is bursting."

Imbruglia revealed she was pregnant back in July, and candidly shared with fans and followers that she had opted for IVF and a sperm donor.

"For those of you who know me, this has been something I have wanted for a very long time," the 44-year-old star had posted on social media. She added that she was "blessed" to have been able to conceive.

IVF – in-vitro fertilisation – is a process where the egg and sperm are combined outside of the body and left to fertilise for several days, before it is implanted into the uterus.

Fans and fellow celebrities were quick to congratulate Natalie, with Louse Redknapp commenting: "Congratulations babe, so happy for you!"

Sophie Ellis Bextor – who recently welcomed her fifth child with husband Richard Jones – added: "Yay!!! Hello, max! Welcome indeed. So glad you’re here safe and sound. Congratulations, mama!!"

Fellow former Neighbours star Kylie Minogue wrote: "Welcome Max and congratulations Nat!"

Natalie found fame in the 1990s in the long-running Australian soap as Beth Brennan, before releasing a cover of 'Torn' by Ednaswap which garnered international acclaim.

She previously dated David Schwimmer, and was married to Silverchair musician Daniel Johns.
