Every once in a while, a movie star hero jumps from the screen and becomes one in real life.
Following the deaths of mother and daughter Aileen and Aryana Pizarro in a head-on collision in San Diego, the surviving son, Angelo Pizarro, reached out to Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson on Twitter, asking if he would record a video memorialising her for the funeral. The tweet went viral, and soon had over 45,000 retweets of his request.
And Johnson soon responded with a direct message to Pizarro containing a minute-long video.
Johnson – who is seen wiping tears from his eyes towards the end of the clip – thanked him for reaching out before saying: "If your mom could see me now, which I'm sure she can, I just want to thank her for all the love and being such a big fan."
The collision happened on Thursday, August 23 when Trevor J Heitmann, also known as YouTube star McSkillet, was driving down the wrong side of Interstate 805, BBC News reports. He was also killed in the crash.
When San Diego news broadcaster Brian Shlonsky thanked Johnson for his "heartfelt" video, the actor replied: "Least I could do. Story is heartbreaking. Stay strong."
A GoFundMe was established to help cover funeral costs for Pizarro's mother and sister. Donations have far-exceeded the original goal of $5,000 (£3,880) and now sit at over $50,000 (£38,794).
With over 12 million followers on Twitter, reaching Johnson is no easy feat – but it just goes to show that Angelo Pizarro's mum had good taste in movie stars. The Rock proves, yet again, why he's the people's champion.
